¡¡¡¡The ¡°International Symposium on GMOs and Environmental Impact¡± was held in Beijing from July 9 to 11, 2004. This symposium was sponsored by NIES/SEPA and CSAB, and assisted by GTZ/BMZ and TWN. Experts in GMO technique and environmental impact, experts in GMOs trade, administrators in charge of biosafety from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Public Health, Ministry of Business Affairs, State Forestry Bureau, State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), and officials from Biosafety Administration Office/SEPA and Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation as well as the government officials and experts from such countries and regions as Germany, Austria, US, Norway, Australia, Britain, Malaysia and Hong Kong attended this symposium. Researcher Xue Dayuan (expert of NIES/SEPA and vice director of Biosafety Administration Office/SEPA) hosted this meeting. Zhuang Guotai (vice director of Department of Natural Ecology Conservation/SEPA and director of Biosafety Administration Office/SEPA) and Zhang Yongchun (vice superintendent of NIES) made an opening speech respectively. More than 30 academic reports were addressed at this meeting, mainly with regard to the latest development in aspects and research fields such as current technique of GMO environmental risk appraisement at home and abroad, GMO environmental impact monitoring and trade and its social economic impact, as well as policies and regulations of biosafety management.
¡¡¡¡Through broad communication and ardent discussion, both Chinese and foreign experts had made plentiful and substantial achievements at the symposium. This success would surely promote the further research and study on the GMO environmental impact and management.
